According to the American Marketing Association marketing is “The activity, set of institutions and processes for creating, communicating, delivering and exchanging offerings that have value for customers, clients, partners, and society at large”. In essence, marketing is everything you need to do to place your product (or service) in the hands of potential customers.
Another way to think of marketing is like this: “If the young man tells his date how good looking, smart and successful he is — that’s advertising. If someone else tells the young woman how handsome, smart and successful her date is — that’s public relations. But if a young man tells his date she’s beautiful, intelligent and is a great conversationalist, he’s saying the right things to the right person. That is, my dear readers, is marketing.”
Marketing is important because it helps you grow your business and eventually make more money. Marketing is the function of finding the right people to persuade to grow your business. Consumers have to understand the benefits of your products or services in order to understand why they are not making money without utilizing your services. One of the biggest pieces of advice I can give my clients is that they must be aware of where their customers are. But more about that in another post.
In conclusions, marketing is all about finding out who your customer is, who your customer should be and making them see the value in what you have to offer them.
